Allie Owl

by Elizabeth Hartman – Quilting & Patchwork Pattern

Modern Contemporary Quilt Patterns –

These bold and graphic owls will make a big impact in your next quilt! Make a baby quilt with a single owl block, or stitch up a whole nest for a striking lap or twin bed quilt.

This pattern includes instructions for a 32″ x 44′ Baby Quilt, a 52″ x 66″ Lap Quilt, and a 68″ x 92″ Twin Quilt. All of the projects are made using 16″ x 28″ Allie Owl blocks.

Allie Owl is made using conventional piecing methods. No paper piecing or templates are used. You will just need your favorite fabric marking tool. A complete list of the pieces needed for each block is also included, so it’s easy to use scraps and/or make blocks to use in other projects.

Please refer to the pattern images for a materials list and and diagrams of the quilts. I made my quilt using Robert Kaufman’s Kona Cotton Solids and a list of the colors I used is included in the pattern.

Please note that all yardages are based on fabric at least 42″ wide, except the backing fabric for the baby quilt, which should be at least 44″ wide.

SELECTING FABRIC
There are two basic fabric options for piecing Hazel Hedgehog. (The Lap Quilt with Fabric Option 2 is shown in the photos.)

Option 1 (shown in quilt size diagrams)
Use the same fabric for all of the faces and bodies and a different colorful fabric for each hedgehog’s spines. This is a good idea if you want to feature print fabrics or a roll of precut 1½” strips. Use one print fabric or precut strip to make each hedgehog’s spines. Use the same neutral solids for all of the the faces and bodies to highlight the assortment of fabrics used for the spines.

Option 2: (shown in sample quilt)
Use 3 coordinating fabric scraps: 8” x 8” light, 6” x 7” medium, and 10” x 10” dark for each block. This is a good idea if you have a variety of solid and monochromatic print scraps that you want to mix and match. Precut 10″ x 10″ squares also work well for this option.

For both options, the eyes and noses should be made with the darkest of all your fabrics.

Please note that my patterns are intended for non-commercial use by home sewers. They are not intended for making items to sell.
